Dr. John and Dr. Joseph Barnhart have practiced for decades, and have come across a fair number of questions from our patients. Our entire Barnhart Dental team works hard to ensure our patients understand and receive answers to all questions in relation to their oral health. Below are some of the questions that many of our Vienna patients have asked us over the years.
Are dental x-rays safe?
According to Dr. Joseph Barnhart, for any radiation to cause harmful effect it would have to exceed a certain threshold of intensity. While any form of radiation is a potential carcinogen, the radiation that dental patients are exposed to is in very small amounts, and are only directed to very specific sites of interest. This specificity, coupled with a very tiny exposure period, is what ensures that dental x-rays are widely considered to be safe diagnostic dental tools.
What is the best toothpaste to use?
Look out for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on any toothpaste before spending your money on it. The ADA seal of acceptance is a quality mark approval of the efficacy and safety profile of dental products that have been approved by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Every ADA approved toothpaste contains fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay. If your toothpaste has that seal, the brand name doesn’t matter, just pick your favorite flavor!
How can I enhance my smile?
With the advancements in dental procedures, there are several techniques at the disposal of the Barnhart Dental team to improve the health and appearance of your smile. We offer a variety of smile restoration procedures, including porcelain crowns, tooth whitening, implants, and veneers to just mention a few. Dr. Barnhart will advise on the best procedure to use to enhance your smile upon a comprehensive oral assessment.
Are dental amalgam fillings safe?
Dental amalgam fillings are safe for dental patients over six years of age. Both the FDA and The American Dental Association have commissioned studies and evaluated the safety profile of amalgams, and have allayed fears associated with these restorations. To date, no scientific study has demonstrated any causal relationship between amalgam fillings with any negative medical conditions.
How frequently should I brush my teeth?
Our Barnhart Dental team advocates for regular brushing twice a day, or after each meal. Make sure you are using proper brushing techniques, a soft-bristled brush, and an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to floss at least once a day as well!
What causes teeth sensitivity?
Gum recession is a major culprit of tooth sensitivity. A receded gum line exposes the inner dentin of the tooth structure that houses the nerves to food and fluids. Tooth sensitivity can be managed by specially designed toothpaste, as well as a number of dental procedures. Consult Dr. John and Dr. Joseph Barnhart for a customized management plan.
What are my options for a missing tooth?
Often, the best option to replace a missing tooth is a dental implant. Dental implants offer a permanent replacement for a badly decayed or extracted tooth. Dr. Joseph and Dr. John Barnhart install a titanium post directly into your jaw bone, and then a realistic prosthetic tooth is affixed to the post to mimic your natural teeth both in appearance and functionality. If cared for properly, a dental implant can last the rest of your life. Other restorative dental options include crowns, bridges, veneers, and more.
